The Engelken family gathered July 30, 2011 at lovely Gage Park in Topeka, KS for our first Engelken family reunion in the 27 years I have been married to an Engelken! What a large family, many memories were relived this wonderful afternoon. Our second gathering is scheduled for Saturday- August 31, 2013 in Seneca, KS.

The Great Overland Station | Topeka KS

The Great Overland Station.

Saturday- August 17, 2013 turned out to be a fun day! My daughter and her family were out of town and I went to their house to tend to the dogs. 94.5 Country was promoting- The Great Overland Station 6th Annual Topeka Railroad Festival. I grabbed my camera and off I went!

Food, games, train rides, a petting zoo and many vendors were on the grounds. I love fresh squeezed lemonade. It was fun watching how they were made.

The Street Organ Grinder was very entertaining. As the organ grinder was playing his organ, he told me to not feed the monkey. The monkey was sleeping, didn’t want me to disrupt him. Well of course I had to peek in the box…..

Along with the railroad, we had Abraham Lincoln and the American Indian. As I was walking through the food court, Abraham Lincoln was standing in line with the flags. The first image of this post was how I saw Ab standing. A short distance from Ab, there was a tent with onlookers. John Anderson’s Seminole Wind was playing. The image below features an American Navajo Indian.

Inside the station- a museum and of course there were many model train sets. These weren’t little sets- the small town was remarkable. Every kid would enjoy seeing these!

In front of the Train Station there is a tribute featuring an American flag with a State flag for each of the fifty states. This is an awesome display. If you can visit the Station, you will be amazed!

What is a Dwarf Banana Tree?

A Dwarf Banana Tree

dwarf banana tree
Dwarf Banana Tree.

Dwarf banana trees are expected to grow between 4 and 8 feet tall. They are easy to grow. It’s considered to be either an indoor or outdoor plant. The ideal temperature for the dwarf banana tree is 55 degrees and warmer.

I have my son to thank for this plant. The end of last spring he brought this plant home. Back then it looked sad- real sad! The price tag reads $26.00. That was not the price he paid for it. He was eyeing it for quite some time. Finally he asked the clerk how much it was. He could buy it for ten bucks. That’s what he did and now it looks beautiful. The clerk did mention he should replant it into a bigger pot. He did. To be honest I never thought it would grow. Adam just moved into his own apartment and left the tree with me on loan.

After searching the internet for the “how to care” for this dwarf banana tree, I realize the sprouts or shoots should be removed. Will do that shortly. The day Adam comes to pick his plant up, I will be rather disappointed. A green thumb I am not- but it’s been fun watching it grow!
